Walk into any school in Connecticut and you will see bright, capable children eager to learn, grow and connect with one another. You will also see dedicated educators working to address key learning needs, advocate for their students and model compassion and empathy. And when those children leave school, they will go home to families that want the best for their child, and commit all the time, energy and resources they can to support their dreams. The people connected to our education system want to see children succeed, and our children deserve that level of care and support.

It is also true that Connecticut has among the largest and most persistent opportunity gaps in the nation. Our schools, segregated along racial and socio-economic lines, have vastly different experiences, available resources and stability. These opportunity gaps directly contribute to a lifetime of economic, health and social inequity. Educational attainment can control your access to economies which, in turn, determines your ability to afford housing, put food on the table and access quality health care. Connecticut schools have remained demonstrably consistent in producing outcomes that align with socioeconomic status and race, and we will continue to do so without significant transformation.

This report visualizes the current state of educational opportunity across Connecticut for the purposes of grounding us in the realities of today, and igniting our collective imagination. What causes our current educational landscape to look the way it does? What would have to happen to lift opportunity in all communities, especially where outcomes have not kept pace with neighboring towns? How can we learn from one another and cooperate meaningfully?

Each day, children get on the bus, educators prepare their lessons, and families hope that the school their child attends will prepare them for a bright future. By seeing where we are, and considering where Connecticut could go from here, we can support students to actualize the dreams we know they can achieve if given the opportunity.

We hope to learn alongside you and consider transformative solutions. Our children deserve nothing less.
