Board of Education member Mike Barbis, who has served on the board for six years, said Board Watch’s presence has made him more aware of his conduct and participation in meetings, and welcomed the additional layer of accountability for board members.
“There’s been a lot of turmoil in our Board of Education and it has definitely been a roller coaster,” Barbis said. “The role of the Board of Education is critical … the connection between the Board of Education and the community is not the way it once was and there is, what I might label, a missing link. We needed this more than anything because the Board of Ed was sort of operating in a vacuum. The members of Board Watch are generating review, they’re creating more transparency, and hopefully at the end of the day, they’re creating more accountability for the members of the Board of Education, and I think at the end of the day, that’s what’s most important.”
