On Oct. 3, 2016, The New Haven Register published an article on Superior Court Judge Thomas G. Moukawsher’s ruling in CCJEF v. Rell, and cited ConnCAN:
After years of calling the way Connecticut funds its schools unfair and arbitrary, something happened earlier this month that surprised Jennifer Alexander, CEO of the educational advocacy group Connecticut Coalition for Achievement Now: a legal acknowledgment.
Alexander recently met with the New Haven Register’s editorial board to discuss Superior Court Judge Thomas G. Moukawsher’s ruling in CCJEF v. Rell, which ConnCAN called “a sweeping indictment of Connecticut’s public education system for its persistent inequities.”
“It was an unexpected but really exciting opportunity and moment in Connecticut,” Alexander said. “It was a surprise in that he did talk about funding, but also went way beyond that.”
Although Moukawsher did not deliver specifics for the state legislature on how to overhaul the state’s funding system, the message that something must be done to fund schools more equitably and fairly came across loud and clear, she said.
“For us, I think that was a really, really important moment,” she said.
