Press release from ConnCAN:

Dec. 22, 2020

Today, President-elect Joseph R. Biden will officially nominate Dr. Miguel A. Cardona, Commissioner of the State Department of Education, to serve as the next U.S. Secretary of Education.

As an organization focused on education equity, ConnCAN (the Connecticut Coalition for Achievement Now) applauds this nomination and thanks Commissioner Cardona for his impactful tenure.

ConnCAN Executive Director Subira Gordon said: “In two years, Commissioner Cardona has proven to be a steady hand who leads with an equity focus. He is eager to provide a quality education for all students and works with all stakeholders to make it happen.”

Gordon added: “As a former Meriden elementary school teacher, principal, and assistant superintendent for teaching and learning, Commissioner Cardona possesses a wonderful blend of executive leadership and classroom experience. His inclusive leadership style has resulted in an African American and Latino studies course and all students having access to a learning device. By re-establishing the state’s opportunity gap taskforce, he gave advocates a playbook to make large legislative change.”

ConnCAN is proud to have worked with Commissioner Cardona on landmark education issues and meeting the challenges of a pandemic. We wish him all the best as his nomination heads to the U.S. Senate.
